About Stephen Abbey

A professional artist, born in Bradford who from 1952 to 1959 studied fine art, commercial art, photography and sculpture at the Bradford college of art and also at Leeds technical college.
He then worked for a few years in photography & the engineering industry.  He has had exhibitions of his art work in Bradford, Shipley, Bingley, Leeds, Sheffield, balckburn, Buxton, Ossett and a paticularly successful
exhibition in Bielfield, Germany.
His work features in collections across europe, Canada, Australia, America and the UK where his designs were commissioned for most of the metal picture railings on the seafront at Redcar.
He fully inllustrated three books for Austin Mitchell M.P. which included such books as "yorkshire jokes" "Yorkshire sayings" and "Talking Yorkshire" along with various cartoons for Northern Books Publishing LTD and various other magazines and periodicals.

Another side to work by Stephen Abbey is Caricature but as caricature can be cutting in its portrayal of
people and their surroundings, Stephen prefers to think of them as humorous portraits.

Stephen Abbey Talks of himself below.
Many of my pictures are of my childhood and memories of people I have known living among the back to back
houses where I lived as a child. I seem to live in these pictures, thats why I make as real as I do.
If they were more cartoon like, I would lose the contact that I have for each idea and memory.
For inspiration, I find myself watching people and studying their faces, expressions and gestures, just fleeting
moments that can spark off an idea or a memory of something that can be worked into a picture.
